In lieu of a known cause for the fire on board that has sent the naval carrier USS Gerald R. Ford out of action, and into port for repairs, The Telegraph on March 20 wrote that, while problems with the laundry facilities and toilets may be suspect: “There are also reports that sabotage may have been involved—not by Iranian undercover operatives, but by crew members disgruntled that their standard six-month tour of duty has been extended for the Gulf operation. To make matters worse, the ship’s toilets have been constantly breaking down and clogging up with sewage. The problems show that despite Trump’s boasting, the mighty U.S. fleet is vulnerable to the same humdrum glitches as Britain’s—much of which is stuck in docks being repaired. Trump’s opponents, meanwhile, claim it also speaks to a wider malaise.”
