'Debanking' Will Cross the Pond under a New Executive Order

The Trump Administration is trying to tie immigration enforcement not only to voting rights and Census data collection, but also to access the U.S. financial system. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on April 14, “I have a place in the U.K.; they want to know who lives in every apartment, and how do we know that it’s not part of a foreign terrorist organization?"; that a Presidential executive order is “in process” to require proof of citizenship, such as a passport, in order to have a bank account.

Bessent, who said he thought the requirement would be “’reasonable,” linked it (and himself), specifically, to the United Kingdom.
