The headline on an April 23 Financial Times editorial celebrated “The Welcome Return of German Military Might.” The implications of the FT’s piece were not lost on Russia’s Special Presidential Envoy for Investment and Economic Cooperation with Foreign Countries and director general of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, Kirill Dmitriev who asked on X, “Given World War II history, who could have imagined this British headline?”
The Financial Times editorial, signed by its Editorial Board, is a hearty endorsement of “Germany’s strategy is to build up its national military strength and ability to wield force independently in order to assume a special responsibility for the conventional defense of Europe,” and in particular, its intent to become “the strongest conventional army in Europe.”
