U.S. Undersecretary of Defense Elbridge Colby, often considered one of the masterminds of President Trump’s new military and strategic outlook with regard to a new era of American dominance, has praised Germany’s new military strategy document. As EIR has reported, Germany’s new strategy paper calls for a “paradigm shift” in Germany’s defense posture, and for the Bundeswehr to become the largest conventional army in Europe as part of its massive rearmament objective in preparation for war with Russia. While generally negative about Europe and NATO as a “paper tiger,” Colby as a representative of the Trump administration heaped praise on Germany’s new commitment to massive war expenditures in an April 24 posting on X.
“President Trump has rightly laid out that Europe must step up, and NATO must no longer be a paper tiger. Through the historic Hague Commitments, Europe has begun to do so…. Germany is now taking the leading role in this. After years of disarmament, Berlin is stepping up. The Department of War is already working closely with European allies, especially Germany, to accelerate this transition to NATO 3.0,” Colby wrote.
