Claudio Descalzi, CEO of Italian energy giant ENI, called for a suspension of the EU ban on Russian gas. Speaking on the sidelines of a Lega cadre school in Rome, Descalzi said: “I think it is necessary to suspend the ban set to take effect on January 1, 2027, on the 20 billion cubic meters of LNG [liquefied natural gas] coming from Russia. And I would also suggest, as the Italian government is saying, that we review the ETS [carbon trade], the tax on the entire heavy industry.”
“I’m not saying it should be canceled,” he added, “but it must be suspended or redistributed, so as not to further penalize an industrial sector that already pays a high price for energy.”
