Germany Prepares Naval Deployment to Hormuz Strait—Once the War Ends

In preparation for a possible deployment in the Strait of Hormuz following the eventual end of the war with Iran, Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) plans to send German naval units to an advanced position in the Mediterranean. “We will deploy a minesweeper to the Mediterranean and provide it with a command and supply ship,” Pistorius told the April 25 issue of Rheinische Post.

“So that we can provide support in the Strait of Hormuz, we will temporarily reduce our commitment elsewhere in a sensible manner and in coordination with our partners,” the minister added. He also noted that a mission in the Strait of Hormuz would only be possible “if we have a mandate from the German Bundestag.” However, preparations should already be made for this eventuality, he argued.
