Hormuz Use of Force Resolution Blocked at UNSC

The UN Security Council met April 2, but did not vote on a resolution to authorize force to re-open the Strait of Hormuz. The vote was set for today, but then last night postponed again supposedly in observance of Good Friday, though that holiday was recognized when the vote was scheduled, reported AFP. No new date has been given for the vote.

According to The New York Times, the vote was effectively blocked yesterday by Russia, China and France, who all opposed any language that authorizes the use of force. The draft text was revised a reported six times, but the part of the text that generated an impasse yesterday states that the Security Council “authorizes member States, acting nationally or through voluntary multinational naval partnerships, with advance notifications to the Security Council,” to use all necessary means “to secure transit passage and to deter attempts to close, obstruct or otherwise interfere with international navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.”
