The AfD (Alternative for Germany), the major opposition party, has emerged as the leading party in the (government-close) ZDF “Politbarometer” for the first time. The Forschungsgruppe Wahlen polling firm found that if Federal elections were held next April 19, the CDU/CSU would only reach 25% (down 1 percentage point from the end of March). The AfD would remain steady at 26%.

The SPD would reach just 12% (down 1), marking its lowest level in this poll. This means that an alliance between the CDU/CSU and the SPD would no longer have a parliamentary majority. The Greens could expect 14% (down 1), while The Left would gain ground to 11% (up 1). The FDP, which has not been listed separately in recent months due to insufficient responses, would reach 3%.
