Stockholm—Antiwar statements are coming now not only from the left, but also from the most pro-NATO circles in Sweden. Former Foreign Ministers of Sweden Carl Bildt and Ann Linde on Swedish public radio April 10 welcomed the pause in the war. Bildt said it was “a lunatic, unnecessary and dangerous war.” He said Trump blinked. Now in the negotiations he will “try to solve the Hormuz Strait problem, which was no problem before the war but was created by the war.” Linde, who brought Sweden into NATO, said that “the security for NATO provided by the USA has been weakened significantly as you cannot trust what Trump says.” She asked about what the “Gulf states think now, as they had the U.S. as the guarantor, but now instead have become targets and become very much damaged by missiles from Iran.”
Bildt said Trump has an agenda that is “strange.” He said, “Netanyahu put pressure on Trump, but has done so on every American president, but Trump fell into that trap.” Bildt said that the EU could have reacted more in the beginning, “as it was clear that this was an illegal unnecessary war of aggression.” On “winning,” Bild said that “In significant parts of the world Iran is considered as winning.”
