SPD Opposes Troop Deployment to Strait of Hormuz

The German Social Democrats’ foreign policy expert Adis Ahmetovic has declared in a morning interview with RTL TV that without a reliable ceasefire, the SPD will not approve sending troops to the Strait of Hormuz, because it would mean to “send Bundeswehr soldiers on a suicide mission.” Ahmetovic’s statement comes in response to an announcement by Chancellor Friedrich Merz yesterday that he is considering sending troops to the Strait of Hormuz.

Western leaders are meeting today in Paris to discuss a possible military mission following the Iran war. The conference, initiated by France and Great Britain and attended by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU), as well as Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni plus 40 other leaders, aims to develop a “multinational plan” to secure the strait. Merz intends to present a concrete proposal for the Bundeswehr’s participation.
