Three Catholic Cardinals Speak Out Against Trump's Iran War on ‘60 Minutes’

CBS News “60 Minutes” made the unusual decision to jointly interview three leading Catholic Cardinals for their April 12 show. This included Archbishop of Chicago Cardinal Blase Cupich, Cardinal Robert McElroy of Washington D.C., and Cardinal Joseph Tobin of Newark, New Jersey. The discussion focused heavily on Pope Leon XIV’s stance against Donald Trump’s revival of the law of the jungle.

Cardinal McElroy was asked if the war in Iran is a just war. “No, in the Catholic teaching this is not a just war,” he responded, noting that the Catholic faith specifies a war must have a “focused aim” and be intended to “restore justice and restore peace” in order to be considered just. Even though he claimed Iran has an “abominable regime,” “this is a war of choice that we went to,” McElroy said, “and I think it’s embedded in a wider moment in the United States that’s worrying, which is this: We’re seeing before us the possibility of war after war after war.”
