The UN Security Council is expected to vote on Thursday on a resolution authorizing action to re-open the Strait of Hormuz by force. The resolution is sponsored by Bahrain but strongly backed by the UAE. Emirati diplomats have urged the U.S. and military powers in Europe and Asia to form a coalition to open the strait by force, unnamed Arab officials said, reported The Wall Street Journal. A U.A.E. official claimed the Iranian regime thinks it is fighting for its existence and is willing to bring the global economy down with it in a chokehold on the strait. The official apparently made this claim without acknowledging that Iran is the victim of an unlawful war of aggression launched by the U.S. and Israel.

The Journal notes that the U.A.E. has also said the U.S. should occupy islands in the strategic waterway, including Abu Musa, held by Iran since the 1970’s but also claimed by the U.A.E., other Arab officials said. In short, the UAE has decided to become a combatant in the war in response to the storm of drones and missiles Iran has aimed at the country.
