May 22, 2026 (EIRNS—Amidst bellicose talk from Donald Trump and his Secretary of State Marco Rubio, threatening regime change in Cuba, yesterday the 13 members of the pro-war Shield of the Americas grouping, founded on March 7, issued a joint statement implying that military intervention in Bolivia may be on the agenda as well. For three weeks, parts of Bolivia have been in complete upheaval due to the mass protests and road blockades carried out by workers and peasant/indigenous sectors that are not only demanding a change in President Paz Pereira’s neoliberal economic policy but a complete overhaul in social welfare policy as well. Domestic and foreign neocons, including Rubio’s State Department, are blaming former President Evo Morales for the upheaval, claiming he is working with drug traffickers to destabilize the government.
Signed by the U.S., Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guyana, Honduras, Panama, Paraguay, and Trinidad and Tobago, the joint statement reflects a plan to enlist some willing members of the group to join with the Southern Command in “defending” the Paz government from what Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau has called “an ongoing coup.” Argentina and Chile are already flying in “humanitarian” aid to Bolivia and there are unconfirmed reports that Argentina was also shipping in weapons.
The effects of such a military operation on regional stability would be catastrophic, at a time when strategically important presidential elections will be taking place soon in three nations—Colombia on May 31, Peru on June 7 and Brazil on October 4. The region is already deeply polarized along left-right lines, and suffering the economic impact of the Iran war. London and Wall Street have been fomenting and manipulating political and economic chaos in the region.
