Russian Intelligence: If Ukrainian Drones Are Launched From Latvia, Retribution Will Follow Despite NATO Membership

May 19—Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) today alleged that the government of Latvia has agreed to let Kiev launch drones from the Baltic country’s territory, to strike deep into Russia and harm the Russian economy. If that happens, it warned, NATO membership will not protect Latvia from a “just retribution.” Russia’s UN representative today raised this scheme at the Security Council, in a briefing where he also blasted “London and Brussels” for doing everything they can, “to secure the continuation of the conflict by Ukraine, to make the conflict drag on and on, and to inflict as much damage as possible on Russia.”

The SVR stated that it has evidence of a planned “series of new terrorist strikes” into Russia, for which “Kiev does not intend to limit itself to using airspace corridors provided to the Armed Forces of Ukraine by the Baltic countries.” Instead, “the plan is to launch drones from the territory of these countries,” thus reducing the flight time to the targets.
