Xi Commends Pakistan's Mediation of U.S.-Iran Negotiations

Chinese President Xi Jinping commended Pakistan for taking the initiative to mediate the U.S.-Iran negotiations during a meeting with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Beijing on Monday, Xinhua reported. Xi called for closer China-Pakistan coordination against “unilateralism and the Cold War mentality.” Sharif credited Xi’s four propositions for Middle East peace—peaceful coexistence within a “common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable” security framework; respect for sovereignty and protection of critical infrastructure; adherence to international law and rejection of the “law of the jungle"; and balancing development with security through regional economic cooperation—as guidance for achieving peace.
