As a result of new work requirements included in Donald Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill,” 43,000 New Yorkers may lose their SNAP benefits this month. The work requirements took effect as of March 1st and include SNAP recipients performing volunteer labor. What goes unmentioned is the fact that many SNAP beneficiaries already work, in some cases a minimum of 40 hours per week, at low-wage jobs, which don’t pay enough for an individual or family to cover both housing and food. Now they are being told that they must forfeit the little income they have in order to work for nothing if they wish to receive SNAP benefits. Is this not slavery?
