Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei announced today that an Iranian diplomatic delegation will travel to Switzerland, emphasizing that the purpose of this trip is to demand the fulfillment of commitments by the United States, reported IRNA. White House envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are reported to already be in Switzerland while Vice President J.D. Vance is departing Washington today. Baqaei’s announcement came as the death toll from Israeli attacks in southern Lebanon rose to at least 32, on top of the 47 that the Lebanese health ministry reported were killed on Friday.

Baqaei said that the Iranian delegation’s trip is intended to pursue accountability and follow up on the implementation of the other side’s obligations. He stressed: “The main criterion for evaluating any agreement is its implementation phase. Given our experience with the other side’s broken promises, we naturally must be very firm and serious in demanding compliance at the time of implementation.” He added that launching negotiations toward a final agreement is contingent[(https://eir.news/2026/06/news/official-text-of-the-u-s-iran-memorandum-of-understanding/) upon the commencement and ongoing implementation of the other party’s commitments under Articles 1, 4, 5, 10, and 11 of the memorandum of understanding. “Unfortunately, this condition has not yet been met due to the other side’s failure to comply,” he said, adding that the purpose of the visit is specifically to clarify how those commitments will be fulfilled.

While some technical requirements of the MOU paragraphs cited by Baqaei have been met–the U.S. blockade was lifted and Iran opened the Strait of Hormuz without charging for passage–there clearly is not a ceasefire in, much less a withdrawal from, Lebanon. [Reuters reported overnight, citing Lebanese state news agency NNA, that within hours of the ceasefire taking effect at 4 PM local time on Friday, Israeli warplanes and drones launched a series of strikes across the Nabatieh area overnight and into Saturday morning, destroying residential buildings, while Israeli artillery shelled Nabatieh and its outskirts before dawn.
