The Speaker of Lebanon’s Parliament, Nabih Berri, took issue today with President Joseph Aoun’s accession to the deal with Israel, brokered by the U.S. He warned that it would lead to attempts to divide Lebanon, and said it “won’t be implemented.” Speaking to Lebanon’s al-Akhbar newspaper, he maintained that the Iran-U.S. negotiations were the only realistic opportunity to secure Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon and that any attempt to separate Lebanon from the U.S.-Iran track would prolong Israeli occupation.
As EIR warned on June 20, rather than getting Israel out of Lebanon and fulfilling the Memorandum of Understanding with Iran to restore the sovereignty (including the territorial sovereignty) to Lebanon, Washington would pressure Lebanese President Joseph Aoun to simply declare that Israel was not in violation of Lebanon’s sovereignty. Such silly “art of the deal” gamemanship only serves to prove to Tehran that there are no adults in Washington with whom to negotiate.
