German Foreign minister Johann Wadephul is competing with his predecessor Annalena Baerbock in laughableness. Following Wednesday evening’s defeat in the race for a German seat in the UNSC, he described the result as a “bitter defeat” and accused Russia for the debacle. “Our clear support for Ukraine and the fact that Russia does not want to hear such a voice in the Security Council have not gone unnoticed,” he said. Russia had also stirred up sentiment against Germany, “and that has not gone unnoticed by anyone.”
Different from Wadephul, the majority of Germans, including some of the mainstream media, see in Germany’s double standard in foreign policy the roots of the failure.
