The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) broke its own record in spending in a single election. Using mostly its super PACs and affiliated front groups, AIPAC has spent nearly $30 million to elect Congresswoman Haley Stevens and defeat the former public health official Dr. Abdul El-Sayed in the August 4 Democratic Primary for U.S. Senate in Michigan, according to AP. The election is often characterized as not a race between El-Sayed and Stevens, but rather an election between El-Sayed and the billionaire class.
The Stevens campaign is virtually owned by AIPAC, but Stevens avoids any mention of her ties to AIPAC, and AIPAC works to disguise their role in bankrolling her campaign. In May the Detroit News reported that AIPAC has gone to extremes to conceal money transfers using super PACs such as the United Democracy Project, and encouraging its mega donors to contribute directly to the campaign, using what some call a “Back Door” funding vehicle. The Detroit News reported that 31% of all Stevens campaign contributions of $200 or more were also contributors to AIPAC since 2025.
