U.S. employers will be breaking the law as of Aug. 3, if they still employ any Haitian workers under the TPS—Temporary Protected Status, which applies to some 300,000 TPS Haitians in the United States., who are now under orders to return to Haiti. Haitians are receiving Federal “call in” letters, ordering them to report to ICE.
This immediately undercuts staff at U.S. nursing homes and other health care operations, food and hotel services, construction work, and other basic functions.
The rank order of numbers of Haitians by state (as of 2024): Florida, 520,017; Massachusetts, 76,659; New York, 185,058; New Jersey, 70,358; and thousands in other states. In Ohio, for example, there are 30,000 Haitians, with 15,000 of those in the town of Springfield. This is up from 7,500 total in Ohio in 2024.
Bipartisan U.S. leaders are speaking out on the stupidity and brutality in the orders of the Homeland Security Department and other Federal authorities.
Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine, nationally prominent Republican, [said to CBS July 27]( https://www.miamiherald.com/news/local/immigration/article316686271.html)that Trump is making “a mistake.” He said the Haitians are contributing to his state’s economy, and have even revived the economy of depressed areas like Springfield, Ohio. Nationally, DeWine reported that one-third of care home facilities, and home-health care are provided by foreign-born workers, many of which are Haitians.
Lt. Gen. Russel L. Honore (Ret.) [said]( https://www.cnn.com/2026/07/29/tv/video/amanpour-honore-haiti-tps-deportation) on the Amanpour interview program July 29 that the Trump policy is sending people to “a war zone” in Haiti. A retired Army general, Honore stressed, “This is not the America I fought for.” The whole situation should be fixed. Why Are We Banishing Our Neighbors There?”
The Springfield, Ohio Haitian Community Help and Support Center Director, Viles Dorsainvil, was interviewed by Amy Goodman on Democracy Now yesterday, saying that he himself and others are agreeable to return to their country, but there is no country to return to. This must be addressed.
All reports point out that the State Department advises U.S. citizens not to travel to Haiti, but that the Haitians here seeking asylum don’t count, and are ordered to return to Haiti.
