The body of martyred Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has been transferred from Iraq to the holy city of Mashhad for the final funeral procession and interment after ceremonies in the cities of Najaf and Karbala in Iraq, reported Mehr News.
Earlier, Mehr News cited organizers reporting that the body’s arrival in Mashhad had been delayed by several hours because of the extraordinary size of the crowds and repeated pauses during the funeral processions, particularly in Karbala, where mourners repeatedly surrounded the cortege to pay their final respects. As a result, the funeral procession in Mashhad, originally scheduled to begin at 8:00 am on Thursday, didn’t begin until 2:00 pm local time.
