Nigerian industrialist Aliko Dangote is planning two enormous projects in East Africa, including a huge oil refinery in Kenya and a port and energy complex in Tanzania.
As chief executive of Dangote Industries Limited, Dangote met with Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan at State House in Dar es Salaam on June 30, Africa Business Communities reported. At the top of the agenda was a project including developing the deep sea port and industrial hub at Mtwara in the extreme south of the country near the Mozambique border. The project would include a special trade zone, a 2,000-megawatt coal-fired power plant, a urea fertilizer project, and transportation infrastructure.
Commenting on the discussion, Dangote said: “We have identified areas that can deliver significant value for Tanzania, and we are ready to work together to develop them for our mutual benefit.” Following the meeting, President Samia appointed the Minister of Planning and Investment to coordinate the partnership with Dangote Industries, with formal negotiations expected to begin in the coming days.
