Dmitry Trenin: NATO's ‘Third Age’ Means War, and the End of NATO

Dmitry Trenin, the president of the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC) as well as an economics professor, published an article in RT today under the title “The Dangerous Logic of NATO 3.0.” He asserts that NATO was originally defensive, but that after the collapse of the USSR it became expansive, expanding NATO and fighting wars “out of area.” Now it is moving into a new stage, whose goal is “publicly proclaimed from the start…, to inflict a ‘strategic defeat on Russia.’ What was deemed impossible during the Cold War has moved into the realm of the thinkable in the West’s proxy war against Russia…. The Europeans dream of eliminating Russia as a serious factor in the geopolitics of Eurasia: to them, this would mean the ‘final solution’ of the long-dreaded ‘Russia problem.’”

NATO’s dream, he writes, is getting close, they imagine, “hoping that long-range drones they have helped Ukraine to produce and send to their targets across Russia are the wonder weapon of this war. They are seeking to strengthen their punch by similarly providing Kiev with long-range cruise missiles and then ballistic missiles. These weapons, it is hoped, will seal the fate of Russia, once and for all.”
