With de-industrialization accelerating, the industrial sector is losing 15,000 every month now, implying that this year, a total of 180,000 jobs will be axed, Tanja Goenner of the federal Association of German Industry (BDI) said in an interview with dpa on Saturday.
The BDI estimates confirm the latest figures from Germany’s Federal Employment Agency, which show 177,000 manufacturing jobs were lost over the past 12 months, primarily in the automotive, machinery, and metal sectors. An indicator of layoffs to come is the fact that two-thirds of applications for short-term work benefits also come from manufacturing firms which cannot keep workers fully employed without state support.
