House GOP Launch New Assault on Free Speech, Subpoena Three Leftist Media

Stephan Prager, a journalist for Common Dreams, published an article on a new move by conservative Republicans in the Congress to crush Press Freedom, calling it a “new McCarthyism.” He writes that “Fox News reported that BreakThrough, a New York-based outlet, was one of three nonprofits that had been issued subpoenas by the GOP-controlled House Ways and Means Committee as part of an investigation into $39 million worth of donations from tech mogul Neville Roy Singham, a self-described socialist who has used his wealth to fund left-wing nonprofits."Singham is an American entrepreneur who lives in Shanghai, has worked with Huawei, and defends China through his funding of left groups including Code Pink and others. Press accounts typically claim he is tied to the Chinese Communist Party.

The other two groups subpoenaed by the Committee, which is led by Rep. Jason Smith (R-MO), are the People’s Forum Inc., “a New York-based activist hub,” and Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research. The subpoena requires them to turn over records about finances, foreign donors and grant recipients, fiscal-sponsorship arrangements, and communications with Singham and any foreign entities.
