Italy: M5S Leader Splits the Liberal Front Over Russia

Former Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, currently head of the M5S movement, has thrown a hand grenade into the opposition front by accusing the West of creating a Russia threat in order to justify rearmament. Speaking at an election rally in Naples on June 8, Conte said: “(We are) throwing money away to buy American weapons, just to please Trump, and we’ll end up cutting funds” from healthcare, education, and innovation. He then continued: “Do you realize they’re fabricating a Russian threat to convince us that we need to arm ourselves to the teeth to counter it and go to war? And they even mention a date: 2030.”

Conte was speaking at a rally with allies of the “Campo Largo,” the block formed by opposition parties that goes from the radical left to the Greens, to the Liberals (Democratic Party), to some so-called “centrists.” Putting together such a minestrone is the only hope of beating the center-right at the next general elections. The vote is scheduled for next year, but the election campaign has already started.

With his statement, Conte has put his russophobe allies in disarray, and threatened to kill the “Campo Largo” strategy in the cradle.

Conte is said to be well-connected to some Vatican circles. He is also known for his admiration for and devotion to St. Father Pius (Padre Pio 1887-1968).
