More than Tank Orders, German Industry Needs Civilian Ones

Handelsblat [Defense Briefing](defense@redaktion.handelsblatt.com) reported July 1 on a survey by the Swiss market research institute Prognos on the militarization potential of the German industry, concluding that “nearly one in two industrial jobs in the country is potentially relevant to dual-use applications.”

Prognos claims that about 3.5 million workers are already employed in industries that are fundamentally capable of producing dual-use goods. This corresponds to roughly 45 percent of the 7.7 million workers in the manufacturing sector and in information and communication technology. At the same time, more than 694 billion euros—or about 43 percent of industrial production—is attributable to goods that are potentially relevant to dual-use applications.
