Dedicated opponents of the data center buildup turned out for approximately 140 rallies in 42 states on Saturday, July 18, according to a write-up in ZeroHedge.com July 19. The very loosely structured coordinating organization, Humans First, is conservative in outlook and coordinated by a woman who was a Tea Party organizer two decades ago, Amy Kremer. The rallies reportedly ranged in size from handfuls to hundreds.
In addition to the withdrawal of big investors, and stall-out of the huge Prince William Data Center Campus project in Virginia, which had been the largest of its kind in the world, various states have reportedly begun to limit data centers. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul has placed a ban on those requiring 50Mw or more of electricity. Virginia has placed a tax of 1.1 cents/kwh on data centers beginning July 1. Kremer’s “organization,” however, while it supports these kinds of limitations, is opposed to a national, or statewide, building moratoria.
