German Media: No Unity on Coming NATO Declaration

According to the German daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zaitung (FAZ), divergences among the 32 NATO member states have prevented the drafting of a common declaration for the coming NATO summit in Ankara. While the wording according to which by 2026, the allies commit to “allocate 70 billion euros for military equipment, support, and training in favor of Ukraine” was confirmed, at the same time Italy opposed a longer-term commitment that includes 2027. Further, Italy has blocked the draft regarding future aid, calling for greater rigor in monitoring financial disbursements to Kiev and for linking aid to Ukraine to a concrete strengthening of the European defense industry.
