President Trump has added a “must sign the Abraham Accords” condition to the nuclear power agreement with Saudi Arabia, which was already signed on Wednesday by Energy Secretary Chris Wright and Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman. Trump did this with posts on Truth Social that were unambiguous: The Agreement is “totally subject to Saudi Arabia joining the very respected and successful Abraham Accords.” Did Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman secretly agree? Did Israel pull Trump’s coat after the signing? Or, does the President no longer care, or no longer remember, what he does or says? Note, that Trump, in the same message on Truth Social, added that Saudi Arabia could have a “non-military nuclear power program like Iran [!!] and the U.A.E. already have ... “
Karoline Leavitt, Trump’s press secretary, followed his lead in her press briefing Thursday afternoon, saying “Yes, they will have to sign, and we look forward to further discussions with the Saudis”; and “The President is always the final dealmaker.” The government of Saudi Arabia is not reported to have responded as of Thursday afternoon U.S. time.
