This has been the all-but-explicit objective of Ukraine and its supporters over the recent period—an objective that has scaled up to a fever pitch over the recent days.
First, in the leadup to Ukrainian Acting President Zelensky’s meeting with President Trump in the White House on July 28, Zelensky stated explicitly that he planned to present new intelligence that Russia is assisting Iran in targeting U.S. bases in the Middle East. This has come into sharper focus after the July 25 Ukrainian attack on an Iranian ship in the Caspian Sea, which killed one Iranian sailor. Ukraine claims that the ship was carrying military supplies headed for Russia, a move which some speculate could be part of a Ukrainian effort to curry favor with the U.S. in its war against Iran in hopes to win more U.S. support for Ukraine’s war with Russia.
Second, there is a new shill in this effort—Laura Loomer, the conservative podcaster who is a trusted source by Trump. Loomer had earlier attacked the Biden Administration’s support for Ukraine and named the neo-Nazi nature of Ukraine’s ruling factions, but she has recently reversed her stance, claiming she had been earlier been duped by Russian propaganda. She now claims that Russia is “evil” and helps Iran to kill American soldiers. Loomer has been on a media tour of Ukraine, where she interviewed Acting President Zelensky and other top Ukrainian officials. Trump himself reposted her interview with Zelensky on his Truth Social page with the comment, “Very good!”
