Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has been busy in talks across the region over the past several days. On Sunday night, Aug. 2, Araghchi held his second round of calls within 24 hours with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan and Pakistani Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir, reviewing “the latest diplomatic efforts and initiatives to maintain and strengthen regional security and stability,” according to Iran’s Press TV. The Saudi Foreign Ministry’s own statement said the two ministers had discussed the current situation, with Prince Faisal affirming Riyadh’s “eagerness to continue the regional rounds in establishing security and stability, in order to achieve the common interests of all the countries and peoples of the region.” Araghchi also spoke separately with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan on Saturday, and later with Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein.
Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty is also engaged in a flurry of activity. He held separate calls Sunday with U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, and Iraq’s Fuad Hussein, reported Xinhua. In his call with Witkoff, Abdelatty stressed the need to prevent the conflict from expanding, stressed that political and diplomatic engagement remained the only path to restoring regional security, and called for stronger international and regional efforts to address what he described as the root causes of the conflicts.
