FAZ correspondent Michael Martens asked Zelensky, at his press conference in Belgrade Aug. 8, “what can we Europeans do to help you to kill more Russians—Russian soldiers, I mean.” FAZ was forced to half-distance from the statement and told DPA that Mertens had “confusingly formulated” his question. Mertens made things worse, as he posted on X that his question was an imitation of Winston Churchill, ("how can we kill more Germans").
Mertens might be really psychically deranged rather than just a provocateur. In a previous article, he recounted how he was haunted by the shock when he learned that his grandfather, whom he adored as a kid, had been a member of Hitler’s general staff and was responsible for many death sentences to fugitive soldiers.
