How Europe's Wildfires Can Be Traced to the 'European Green Deal'

“Climate Change” is the usual default setting for blame for the wildfires that are threatening large areas of France, Spain, and Portugal. However, most of these mega-fires would never have been possible without the European Union’s “European Green Deal.” About 38% of the continent is covered with forests, yet 55% of the wildfires are located in the “natural” areas designated to be “undisturbed” by humans, in accordance with EU guidelines, according to a 2025 report in the Journal of Environmental Management by Victor Resco de Dios. These natural areas are loaded with dead wood and tinder, making fires more likely, faster burning, more intense, harder to extinguish, and more dangerous for firefighters. For generations, farmers and ranchers have improved the land and made large fires much rarer. Europe needs modern forest management, not failed EU guidelines.
