The Republican Lawyers Association (RAV) calls for a ban of the Alternative for Germany party, claiming this were the only appropriate way to stop the rise of the party, whereas the approach to fight against the AfD politically would fail. An open letter on the issue has been signed by more than 1,000 citizens, mostly with a background in the juridical sphere.
The RAV bases its argument against the AfD on an assessment by the left-liberal Society of Freedom Rights (GFF) that the AfD’s policies violate the principle of human dignity enshrined in the Basic Law and the principle of democracy, and are therefore unconstitutional.
