Relations between Algeria and Mali took another step forward as the Prime Minister of Mali Abdoulaye Maïga led a large delegation on an official visit to Algeria on Aug. 24. Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune extended an invitation to his Malian counterpart, General Assimi Goïta, to pay an official visit to Algeria, during his meeting with the Malian delegation, putting an end to fifteen months of strong diplomatic tensions between the two countries.
The meeting and invitation mark a significant improvement of relations and follow the resumption of diplomatic relations between the countries this past July. Relations between Mali and Algeria had deteriorated sharply after the military came to power in Mali in 2020 and 2021.
