Former Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene’s August 16 post urging everyone to “speak out and boldly” against the insanity of Trump administration officials “discussing using nuclear weapons on Iran” not only registered six million views in 48 hours. It made headlines internationally—and began to force the reality of the very-real danger of nuclear war into the U.S. Establishment media. Among others, local news channels of CBS and ABC in multiple cities across the U.S. carried short reports on her warning, as did USA Today, with its large print and huge digital following.
Other voices are getting through. On August 16, Forbes published an article headlined “Abolishing Nuclear Arms Can Avert War that Kills Billions, Experts Say,” which features the results of the nuclear war simulation called “Plan A” carried out in 2017 by Princeton University’s Science and Global Security Program. Author Kevin Holden Platt interviewed Sharon Weiner, an American University professor who was part of that Princeton simulation, which concluded—as has every other such simulation—that any initial “cascade of nuclear clashes,” would set off a “chain reaction of catastrophes that would circle the Earth and shoot into the heavens.”
Platt writes: “Many Americans might not have a good grasp of the immense scope of the death and destruction that would speed across North America, Europe, Russia and surrounding sections of the globe, Weiner says, partly because `the U.S. government only estimates immediate impact on military objectives when it assesses the consequences of nuclear use,’” never counting the mass deaths resulting from the “nuclear-winter-triggered famines” which would follow. Professor Owen Brian Toon from the University of Colorado’s Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics at Boulder, co-author of a “terrifying” 2022 U.S.-German study on these famines (“Global food insecurity and famine from reduced crop, marine fishery and livestock production due to climate disruption from nuclear war soot injection”) described to Forbes the “nightmarish” mass death that would result.
