A trilateral meeting between the leaders of Russia, China, and the US could take place on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in November, Russian daily, Izvestia, suggested on July 31, given that it appears that all three may attend. The possibility of a three-way summit “has stirred the global imagination,” Izvestia wrote. “It would be an ideal opportunity to discuss strategic stability,” at a time when there are no longer any nuclear treaties between the world’s two largest nuclear powers, Russia and the United States.
The APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting will be held Nov. 18-19, in Shenzhen, China.
The Izvestia article signals Russia would be interested in such a summit taking place. Russian Ambassador-at-Large Marat Berdyev, the Foreign Ministry’s senior official at APEC, told Izvestia: “It’s too early to talk about specific meetings yet. However, in my opinion, such a trilateral meeting would be very useful. In practical terms, it is entirely feasible, since the three leaders of the major powers are expected to attend the summit.”
