German Defense minister Boris Pistorius has come under heavy fire from Moritz Schularick, head of the IFO Institute in Kiel, who is described as the inventor of the so-called “Sondervermögen,” the Schachtian 100 billion Euro fund for rearmament announced by the Scholz government in 2022 (the “Zeitenwende,” Epochal Shift). Schularick openly criticizes the way Defense minister Pistorius is spending the money. Instead of buying tanks, the money should be invested in “fighting the war of the future,” with drone and AI technologies, says LSE-trained Schularick.
“It’s high time to spend wisely,” he said in a Focus interview. “Nothing is more costly for the public than the grotesque inefficiency in defense spending.” The way the money is spent is “completely insane”: vast sums of money are being spent for competing weapons systems in Europe, plus massive investments in tanks instead of high-tech. Politicians are wasting billions on scrap metal.
