In an interview with the RTL Nachtjournal Spezial, the BSW party’s Sahra Wagenknecht stressed that growing opposition in the east of Germany against the Merz government is also rising in the west.
When asked by RTL whether eastern Germany, where state-level elections are scheduled for Saxe-Anhalt (Sept. 6) and Mecklenburg-Prepomerania (Sept. 20), is foreshadowing what lies ahead for western Germany, she said: “Yes, of course. We’re already seeing that now.” In the east, she says, people are historically accustomed to not believing everything the evening news reports.” But even in the west, “many people feel they’re being lied to,” she added, pointing to the debates over pension levels and military buildup.
