Will Iran Escalate the War Beyond Southwest Asia?

The Financial Times posted an article yesterday in which it cited two unnamed Iranian officials indicating that Iran has weighed attacking US military targets in Europe should Donald Trump resume hitting Iran militarily. One potential target named is the Bezmer airbase in central Bulgaria which the Bulgarian parliament voted last month to allow the US to station air refueling aircraft. Another potential target is the British airbase in Cyprus. FT’s sources said Iranian forces have also separately examined attacking subsea fibre-optic cables in the Strait of Hormuz in the event of an escalation.

“The threats reflect the defiant mood in Tehran, where many within the regime increasingly see a resumption of the war as a matter of when, not if,” the FT said. The FT notes that the IRGC last month threatened the UK over American use of British military bases, saying that “any base that is used to launch an attack on Iranian territory will be considered a legitimate target.”
