Winner of the Saxony-Anhalt election Ulrich Siegmund (AfD) announced his candidacy for governor (Ministerpräsident) of the state. At the same time, his party announced a candidate for the Council chairman. The state parliament will convene Oct. 6. A date for the election of the Ministerpräsident has yet to be fixed.
Observers view Siegmund’s announcement as the result of a successful horse trading with some CDU representatives. The AfD needs three more votes to elect a governor in the first round. However, it needs only a simple majority in the third round if another party were to abstain.
