Saxony-Anhalt election winner Ulrich Siegmund (AfD) announced his candidacy for governor (Ministerpräsident) of the state. At the same time, his party announced a candidate for the Council chairman. The state parliament will convene Oct. 6. A date for the election of the Ministerpräsident has yet to be fixed.
Observers view Siegmund’s announcement as the result of successful horse trading with some CDU representatives. The AfD needs three more votes to elect a governor in the first round. However, it would need only a simple majority in the third round if another party were to abstain.
