The Pentagon’s Inspector General released on Monday its first report on U.S. conduct, including costs, of the Trump/Hegseth war on Iran, covering the period Feb. 28 to June 30. The DOD reported the cost of the war to be an estimated $33.4 billion as of June 29, including $22.3 billion for expended munitions and $3.7 billion in equipment losses, but not including costs for infrastructure repair. The State Department reported costs of $113 million, including almost $80 million for evacuations of 9,000 Americans.

The Congressionally-mandated report also noted, “[T]he munitions expenditure on OEF has resulted in strategic inventory shortfalls and revealed industrial base bottlenecks for munitions resupply.” It also lists losses of American assets, including four F-15s destroyed, one F-35 damaged, seven KC-135 tanker aircraft damaged or destroyed, and up to 30 MQ-9 Reaper drones destroyed.

The report notes that “Iranian strikes damaged and destroyed hundreds of buildings and structures at US bases in Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Oman, and Jordan during the conflict,” but does not include those costs in the cost estimates, saying it’s not yet clear if all the bases will be rebuilt, or who will foot the bill.
