Four years after the terrorist attack against Nord Stream, the German government has not yet found the culprit. But less than a month after the failed drone attack at the Leipzig airport, Berlin found who did it: Russia.
The German government has announced that “police and information services” have come to the conclusion that Russia was behind the Aug. 5 attempted drone attack at the Leipzig airport and has taken retaliatory measures. The Russian consulate in Bonn and the “Russian House” cultural center in Berlin were closed and the ambassador was summoned at the Foreign ministry. More sanctions will be announced eventually. “Our services’ findings clearly point to a Russian involvement,” Interior minister Dobrindt stated in a press conference together with Foreign minister Wadephul.
From the Kremlin, the reaction was: “Germany has made a serious mistake.”
On queue, EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy Kaja Kallas and other EU member countries summoned the respective Russian ambassador. Ursula von der Leyen said she will talk to NATO secretary general Rutte about how to show “solidarity” with Germany.
The German government has not released the evidence that points to a Russian hand behind the attack.
In the Bundestag, opposition parties AfD and Linke raised doubts on the issue and demanded that the results of the investigation be made public.
Götz Frömming, Bundestag faction leader of the AfD, asked on X: “How has the possibility of a false-flag operation by Ukraine been ruled out? After all, it would suit Ukraine very well if this action were to force Germany to deploy its resources against Russia. Russia, on the other hand, can have no interest in this. Just as Russia could have had no interest in blowing up the Baltic Sea pipeline.
