The Cologne-based Institute of German Economy (IW), which is closely aligned with employers, found in a study that in the first six months of this year, German companies invested 5.6 billion euros in China—a third more than in the same period last year. By comparison, investments in the United States dropped by two-thirds to 4.3 billion euros, reported Spiegel.

Trump’s sanctions are one factor deterring new investments in the U.S., but the more decisive factor is that, in order to stay technologically up to speed companies find no alternative but to increase their own engagement in China.
