The Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem, Theophilos III, is planning to meet both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, as a peacemaker, to help find a way to put an end to the war in Ukraine. On June 5, 2026, he had discussed this effort with President Donald Trump, who warmly supported the initiative. The initiative parallels those of Pope Leo XIV as well as those of the Church of Greece.
In a written interview with Breitbart, Patriarch Theophilos said that the Patriarch of Jerusalem “possess[es] the spiritual and moral authority to speak into conflicts and promote peace in ways that few others can.” He added that he had also received the endorsement of the Greek State and His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew.
The Patriarch urged “President Donald Trump as one of the most powerful leaders in the world, to bring to bear the influence, gravitas, and authority of his office for the establishment of peace,” adding, “and to empower those working to end the conflict to find hope. This hope is not only in the cessation of fighting, but hope in a vision whereby communities are rebuilt, families are reunited, and children have a secure future.”
The Patriarch has collaborated with both the late Pope Francis and Pope Leo XIV on issues of peace, especially in Southwest Asia, and in promoting unity between the two churches.
