Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps on Tuesday unveiled a 25-page open letter addressed to the American people. In a press conference announcing the letter, Spokesman Brigadier General Hossein Mohebbi urged journalists to relay it “in full and faithfully” and for Americans to read it “at least once.”

The move is timely, as whatever support for the war remains among Americans is falling about as fast as diesel and other prices are rising. With the midterm elections looming, and Trump publicly rejecting recent proposals from Iran for reopening the Strait of Hormuz and resuming negotiations, the danger of another attack, perhaps before the midterms, is not off the table.

Mohebbi said the effort goes beyond publicity. Iran, he said, wants to lay out its reasoning in an “honest, logical and genuine” way. Referencing the thick narrative that the U.S. media maintains, Mohebbi noted that while the U.S. runs hundreds of TV and radio networks that reach other nations around the clock, Iran has little media presence inside America. A letter, he said, was the practical solution.

Pointing to the series of costly wars of recent decades, which, the letter says, “have brought nothing but misery to the US economy and the American people,” Mohebbi asserted, “If the US spent at least 10% or 5% of all its expenditure on its military campaigns against other countries [“on positive investments” implied; translation text may be incomplete—ed.] or put the money into development in these countries, the US would be a favorite.”
