Reactions to the Trump-Xi summit by Republican and Democrat members of the London-run war party were quick and sharp.

Among the Republicans, Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) commented that the military honors given to Xi were excessive. Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), who sits on the Senate Intelligence Committee, also thought the honors given to Xi were too much, and he additionally protested that Trump had invited Russian President Putin to the December G-20 meeting in Miami, reported The Hill on Sept. 25. Perhaps Cornyn is unaware of the fact that Russia has in fact been a member of the G-20 since its inception.

Cornyn said, “it’s ‘pretty clear’ that China, Russia, Iran and North Korea have formed an ‘axis’ alliance opposed to the United States…I think the president needs a reset with Putin,” arguing that Trump doesn’t recognize “Putin as the stone-cold killer that he is.”

Other reactions reported by The Hill included Sen. Roger Wicker (R-MS), chair of the Senate Armed Services Committee, who warned about rolling out a lavish reception for Xi, given the clashes between the U.S. and the Chinese Communist Party. Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C) commented, “Any time we roll out the red carpet for a despot from Russia, or a despot from China, I feel the same way…It’s kind of not good.”

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) may have been the lone Republican voice supporting Trump, writing on his X account, “I’m glad this meeting is happening; diplomacy is key. Talk more, war less.”
