Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed in his Sept. 23 press conference at the United Nations that the Trump administration has invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to the G20 summit which the U.S. will host this December in Florida. “We think it’s an opportunity for him to engage not just with the President but with other world leaders,” Rubio said.
He had been asked if the U.S. has a desire for another Putin-Trump summit. That, Rubio said, has not been discussed. He reported the G20 invitation, but did add that if there is another opportunity for the two to meet, “and there’s a purpose behind the meeting, that would be good,” cautioning that a summit would require “a lot of work … beforehand.”
The UK and the Zelensky regime suggest a different purpose for the invitation. Britain’s Sky News headlined its story “‘Out from the cold': Trump offers Putin return to world stage with G20 invite,” and asserted that Rubio “has suggested it could open the door for face-to-face talks with Volodymyr Zelenskyy.”
Zelensky himself told reporters Thursday morning that the invitation could provide “one of the best” opportunities for a trilateral meeting between Ukraine, the United States and Russia which could bring about “a real result,” Ukrainian National News reported.” UNN quotes Zelensky: “This is a potential opportunity for a trilateral meeting with a real result,” because Trump is “influential,” but also “our partners, the Europeans” are also in the G20. Zelensky still desperately hopes his “partners” will somehow force Russia to accept NATO troops in Ukraine to save his Nazi regime.
Russia is not rushing to accept the U.S. invitation. Asked at his press briefing today if it had done so, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said no; that is “premature.” We did receive “this kind invitation … which we value,” he said, but no decision has been made. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov likewise told reporters that Russia will take into consideration “the full range of circumstances related to the current situation” before any decision is made.
The opportunity for a different trilateral summit—one between Putin, Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping with the actual potential to move the world out of today’s suicidal geopolitical paradigm—will present itself before the G20, at the November APEC Summit in China.
